The Forest of Hands and Teeth

by Carrie Ryan

Synopsis:
In Mary's world, there are simple truths.

The Sisterhood always knows best.
The Guardians will protect and serve.
The Unconsecrated will never relent.

And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village. The fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth.

But slowly, Mary's truths are failing her. She's learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power. And, when the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness.

Now she must choose between her village and her future, between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded by so much death?

I really liked this book! It was kind of creepy, but interesting. The main character kind of started bugging me though. I can't tell you why because it would ruin the book, but we can talk after if anyone reads it. :) There are a total of 4 books in the series and so I am going to start reading book 2 this weekend.

The Help

by Kathryn Stockett

The Help is about a young white woman in the early 1960s in Mississippi who becomes interested in the plight of the black ladies' maids that every family has working for them. She writes their stories about mistreatment, abuse and heartbreaks of working in white families' homes, all just before the Civil Rights revolution.

I didn't know if I would like this book or not, but I really did! I thought it was tender/sweet but also sad at the same time. I was just horrified by how these maids (and all African Americans) were treated, but it had some really sweet relationships and had a great overall message about acceptance. I got totally engrossed in the 3 main characters and their stories. I just fell in love with them. I can't wait to go see the movie now!!
